Tell the Kids I Love Them is my genre-defying book about fathers and sons, love and loss and war and lacrosse. Threaded with dark humor, it blends investigative reporting, epistolary storytelling and poetry with writing about history and mental health. It was inspired by an essay of the same name I wrote for Oxford American magazine in 2022. That essay has been recognized by The New York Times, The Best American Essays and Longreads.com. Tell the Kids I Love Them partly focuses on my time reporting on the war in Iraq as a journalist embedded with U.S. soldiers and Marines between 2004 and 2006 and my reporting in Hanoi on the history of the Vietnam War for Smithsonian magazine in 2023. This memoir celebrates the things that saved my life, helped me heal and made me a better human being: Writing, reading, poetry, journalism, lacrosse and teaching.
